2014 Spring Show

Rockin' It A Capella is the theme for our 2014 Spring Show which will be held on May 10 at the Rapid City Performing Arts Theatre in the former Dakota Middle School Building. We'll have two performances, one at 2 p.m. and a second at 7 p.m.

As the title suggests, we will be celebrating a capella rock through the decades from way back in 1961 with Ricky Nelson's "Hello Mary Lou" through the 1980s with "For The Longest Time" by Billy Joel and up to the current decade with "When I'm Gone" from the movie "Pitch Perfect" and Train's "Hey Soul Sister."

We'll even include some tunes by the Beach Boys, The Drifters and even Queen. That's right, Queen. Plan on hearing tunes you would never expect from a Barbershop Harmony chorus.

Included this year will be tunes by some of our finest singers from Rapid City's own middle schools. We'll be singing songs that appeal to them and they'll be showing their appreciation of songs their parents and grandparents know and love.

Also included this year will be a performance by the 2011 Harmony Sweepstakes National Champions, Da Capo! What a treat it is to have this a capella group, hailing from Washington, D.C. grace the stage at the Performing Arts Theatre.

Each of the members of this extraordinary barbershop quartet is a music professional dedicated to educating young people about the barbershop harmony style. Da Capo has been together since 2009, when they assembled to sing a marriage proposal to the lead singer's wife to be. They've been members of the Barbershop Harmony Society for a combined 58 years.

While they're in town, they'll be visiting the Rapid City area schools to tell the story of barbershop harmony. And, they'll be giving some truly outstanding examples while they're in the schools.

The Spring Show is the Shrine of Democracy Chorus' major fundraising event of the year. Tickets for the show are available from any chorus member, at the Westside Millstone Family Restaurant, at the Performing Arts Center box office (394-1786), or by calling (605) 646-3095.
