Lynden D. "Lindy" Levitt

Lynden Dale Levitt, 78 of Midland, Michigan, formerly of Rapid City, SD, died December 15, 2003, at his home. Lindy was born on January 21, 1925, in Aberdeen, South Dakota, son of the late Jack Levitt and Josephine (Berndt) Levitt. He attended school in Iowa and joined the Navy in 1943. He fought in World War II and the Korean War, serving in Naval Intelligence in the Pacific Theater. Returning to Rapid City in 1952, he attended the University of South Dakota and graduated from the University of South Dakota School of Law. In 1949, he married the former Carolyn Cowles in Flandreau, SD. She preceded him in death in 1984. He served in the South Dakota Attorney General's office and established a private law practice in Rapid City, where he practiced law for 32 years. Lindy was the founder of the Mount Rushmore Chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America and the Shrine of Democracy Chorus. He also served on the National SPEBSQSA board of directors. He was extensively involved in finding and initiating yearly reunions of his Naval Intelligence veterans group. Lindy retired from his law practice and moved to Arizona for several years. In 2000 he moved to Michigan to be near his daughter Nancy. Lindy is survived by two daughters, Nancy (Mike) Ladenburger of Midland, Michigan, Linda Levitt (Kevin) Ahern of Paradise Valley, Arizona; a son, Barton (Gloria) Levitt of Barlett, Illinois; 3 sisters, Maxine (Harold) Fritzsche of Rapid City, Marj Hood of Rapid City and Berniece (William) England of Norman, Oklahoma; and 7 grandchildren: Sara and Stacy Ladenburger of Michigan, Carolyn Levitt of Illinois, Tad Levitt-Evans, Brian Levitt-Ahern, Jane and Caitlin Ahern of Arizona.
