Charles "Sandy" Sandstedt

June 14, 1924 – February 12, 2004



Charles "Sandy" Sandstedt passed away in his home at Hisega, Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, of pancreatic cancer at the age of 79. Charles was born on June 14, 1924, to Carl and Anne (Straub) Sandstedt in Omaha, Nebraska. He graduated from high school at Morgan Park Military Academy in Chicago, Illinois, in 1943. He received a bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of South Dakota. Charles bravely served his country in the U.S. Army, Infantry Division during World War II in Italy and France, for which he has received a Bronze Star medal. Sandy married his childhood sweetheart, Jean Dempewolf, in Rapid City on June 9, 1946. They honeymooned at Hisega and spent 51 years together. They attended Emmanuel Episcopal Church and participated in starting St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, where they attended for many years. Jean preceded him in death in 1997. They leave behind: a son, Chris of Rapid City; daughters, Lee Dawson of Des Moines, Iowa, and Linda Antolic of Milwaukee, Oregon. They also have 5 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Sandy worked for Black Hills Power and Light Company for 24 years as head of the Accounting Department and later the Human Resources Department. He retired in 1985. He was an active leader in the community of Rapid City and was dedicated to provision of programs, activities and facilities for the children and youth. Sandy served as President in both the Optimist Club and the Jaycees. He also loved to sing the harmonies of Barbershop in the Chorus and competed in several national competitions. He enjoyed hunting with his friends and his dog. Sandy was passionate about fly fishing and teasing his pet cats.
